What does dancing during a rain shower have to do with juggling? Well, Darren worked on his dance moves by practicing the gliding factory. I learned to do a five ball half shower. I did it by itself and transitioning to and from different tricks. I also finally completed last month's trick successfully (not on film though.) We have super ambitious plans for next months tricks, can't wait to show them to you.

I recently discovered Tim Farris on the Jay Mohr podcast. I haven't read any of his books yet, but he was very interesting. Two of the things I came away with from the podcast were; the 80/20 principle and asking "what’s the worst that could happen?" The 80/20 principle is that 80% of your results come from 20% of your actions. I tried to relate this to juggling shows. In the last year, Darren has spent some time doing online advertising, and I have spent a bunch of time designing this website and our brochures. However, I would guess that 80% of our show offers come from people who have heard about us through Jesse Rothaker (thanks again Jesse). This involved almost no work on our part. We met him after a show at the Intercourse Heritage Festival, and since then he has told tons of the people he has performed for about us. NOTE: Darren disputes the 80% figure for Jesse, but agreed that most of our shows came from some sort of referral. If we really want to do more shows, that is what we should try to duplicate.
Once again I am a little late with these. I really like how we haven’t repeated a prop yet. Darren decided to mix it up with a snowboard trick this month. I was trying to learn a three club trick. I ran into a lot of problems, but on the bright side I figured out how to make a video without the black boarder. Next month, I am going to work on a five ball half shower. Hopefully this will be easy enough for me to take some time to work on my old tricks. I haven’t worked on two diabolos since January. I think I may take page out of my instagraming friends and start throwback Thursdays where I will only work on old tricks.
Last year for my March post, I made a list of ideas for our Fourth of July showdown. We haven’t been asked to do that show again this year, but hopefully we will get to do something like that this year. The three rounds of the competition are a different solo skill, a shared solo skill and a new act. I already told Darren that I wanted to do 5 ball juggling as our shared skill. I haven’t put much thought into what my new act could be, so I decided to once again come up with a bunch of ideas for new acts this March. I have been jotting down ideas for the last week, but I lost my little piece of paper. Here are the ideas that I remember.
I know it’s March 4th, but I am getting closer to posting in the correct month. Anyway this month(or maybe it’s last month), you are getting a bonus video. That’s right Darren is joining in with his own Trick of the Month, so from now on you can expect two videos each month. Who knows maybe Darren will even start his own blog thing. I wonder what it would be called. I hope it would have a D in the name, maybe “D - Tales” Back to the tricks, this month was much more successful than last month. I was able to make a lot of progress with my trick. I came up with the trick last summer, but never was able to get more than 5 catches. I figured out how to continue the trick, and I can consistently get at least 10 catches. Of course, Darren nailed his trick as well.
Whenever Darren and I are trying to make a decision, one of Darren favorite reasons to give for doing something is that it would be "more professional." For some reason, that always bugs me. With this post, I am going to try and explain(figure out) why that is. I am not trying to make the argument that it would be better to be less professional, I am only explaining why saying that plan A seems more professional than plan B is not enough of a reason to choose plan A.
My first Trick of the Month was two diabolos. I didn't master it, but I definitely figured some things out. Sorry it took so long to post this. Hopefully from now on we will able to post these in the first week of each month. My goal for next month will be to juggle three balls while doing a three beat weave with poi. If you have any ideas for future tricks I should try or suggestions for improving the videos, let me know. If you want to learn any diabolo tricks diabolotricks.com is a nice site. Well, I missed putting up a blog post for December, and January is already over half way finished, so I figured I needed to post something. I feel like I've gotten off to a slow start to the year juggling wise. I have lots of little goals, but haven't made the time to do much. Most of my goals involve making/altering props. Also this year I am going to try and learn a Trick of the Month and post a video of of it on here. Progress on January's trick is limited, but hopefully I have something to post in two weeks. I always like to have something interesting to show off in these posts, so I figured I would show our new brochures. After our photo shoot from Brooke Courtney Photography, we ended up with a lot of great pictures, so we wanted to do something with them. I designed this brochure and modified it numurous times to meet D's high standards. Now all I need to do is find a place to print them up. Contact me if you know of a good place to get brochures printed.
It might make more sense for me to wait till January to write about what I would like to be able to do in the next year, but I think there will be some other things to write about/announce in the next couple of months. Anyway, we have a lot of ideas for new routines and even talked about making an audition tape for America’s Got Talent, but I want to talk about doing something that seems simple but is much less likely to happen then any of those goals.
I was trying to think of something to write on here for this month. One of my ideas was a personality quiz to tell you if you were more like Darren or me. The problem with that idea was that there were only two results, so that didn't seem that fun. Also, I think that Darren and I are the only ones who actually read this, and a D vs. K quiz wouldn't be interesting for us since I would get K and he would get D. Instead, I decided that I would make a quiz that assigns a juggling prop to your personality. There are lots of possible outcomes, but the results don't particularly mean anything. I promise you there was a rationale for different props answering in different ways. You can answer honestly to see what you are, or you can choose answers to see if you can get a particular prop. There are video links with all the results. Unfortunately, they aren't working, so you will have to copy and paste them into your address bar to watch them. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this quiz and leave a comment.
